Upon receiving the travel game as a gift, however, I was a little disappointed with some of its features.<p>In this version the grid has raised edges which are meant to keep the tiles in place. Unfortunately, there is still room for the tiles to move around and a high chance of them being displaced if there is a bump or accident during play. I had envisioned the grid being something that the tiles would snap into, thereby avoiding disaster of any kind. Snap-in tiles would also make it possible to save a game in progress and come back to it later. I thought that this was an advertised feature, but I haven't yet figured out how you could successfully save a game and pack it away with the current design.<p>There is a storage space beneath the grid which is very handy for all of the materials, but the way it opens up is cheaply constructed. The plastic separates from the actual grid so that the board and the grid do not match up quite right when viewing. I solved the issue with some scotch tape, but I would have thought the makers could have designed this better.<p>All in all, scrabble lovers will love the game just because they can play it wherever and whenever they want. The 4-letter wooden squares are printed on both sides, so there are limitless possibilities of game boards. The pegs are sorted in a very sturdy plastic box, and everything is neatly stored in the game box. The game itself is challenging in that you can make the words as easy or hard as you want, depending on how competitive you are in getting a high score each play. I have been impressed many time over with the words that my child comes up with and the repeated use of the letters to get a high score. The only problem I had with our game was that the sand in the timer had escaped from the inner hourglass and was "swimming" around in the outer tube. (Nothing had leaked out into the game.) I called the number for Pywacket Games that was in the instruction booklet. They mailed me a new timer within a week. No hassle. The game does come with short, very easy to understand rules, so those of you who need some help with rules have this as a great resource for learning the game. This edition of the Scrabble game is great to look at, so it won't bother you to keep it out all of the time - even with guests over. Very good construction, the board itself has a very sturdy feel. The tiles and tile racks are also well made and fit the aesthetic theme. I can see why some people would like the tiles and the racks to be 'heavier,' but it isn't like these are poorly made, and I can see them lasting a long time. It also comes with a classy looking score book and pencil to keep track of the game scores easily. The best feature of this edition is the glass surface. It looks incredible, and it rotates smoothly and effortlessly. I have never had a problem with the tiles being knocked out of place when the surface is rotating. The box is huge, but needs to be since the game takes up a lot of space, especially when trying to protect the glass surface. I can't imagine the glass ever chipping or showing a ton of finger prints.<br /><br />Overall, this edition of a classic game is worth spending a bit more on. It is extremely well constructed, and it looks great. Hours upon hours of fun gameplay to be had in this giant box. Scrabble isn't necessarily for everyone, so try it out on a cheaper edition before taking the plunge on this more expensive version. Upon receiving the travel game as a gift, however, I was a little disappointed with some of its features.<p>In this version the grid has raised edges which are meant to keep the tiles in place. Unfortunately, there is still room for the tiles to move around and a high chance of them being displaced if there is a bump or accident during play. I had envisioned the grid being something that the tiles would snap into, thereby avoiding disaster of any kind. Snap-in tiles would also make it possible to save a game in progress and come back to it later. I thought that this was an advertised feature, but I haven't yet figured out how you could successfully save a game and pack it away with the current design.<p>There is a storage space beneath the grid which is very handy for all of the materials, but the way it opens up is cheaply constructed. The plastic separates from the actual grid so that the board and the grid do not match up quite right when viewing. I solved the issue with some scotch tape, but I would have thought the makers could have designed this better.<p>All in all, scrabble lovers will love the game just because they can play it wherever and whenever they want. The 10-by-11-inch plastic board with its raised squares holds the tiles securely while you play, then folds up to become a neat, sturdy, 6-by-11-inch carrying case for the clear plastic letter racks and the cloth bag of tiles (you can use the bag for drawing letters). The letter racks can fit into the sides of the board if necessary, though they're not obviously meant to do so, making this less of a car or bus game than it might have been; still, it's perfect for train, plane, or boat. Be careful not to drop the tiles, as they're quite a bit smaller than standard Scrabble tiles--but even if you do, good old Milton Bradley will replace the ones you lose. I am most skilled verbally (but math scares the hell out of me), and this game is a challenge because it is played with only 4 letter words, so vocabulary is not of much concern. I like it for me as an elder citizen (62 y/o) because I feel it keeps me verbally alert at an important time in my life to do that. I like it a lot because I can play with my friends and my 5 & 6 year old great-nieces. Also, it is very compact and can easily be played on a plane or in a car, etc. Anyone can play and most everyone will enjoy its fast paced structure, ease for all ages, and super-easy to take it along when traveling. Plus, it will keep the kids occupied, adults can play with kids, and it will keep adults occupied as time flies by! Even though I have good verbal skills, I am not the winner in at least 3/4 of the games I play. I can write, I know words, and think/speak well "on my feet," but I am just not as fast as many others! They love that!!<br /><br />another topic:<br />One of my friends and I play regular Scrabble just about every time she can get here or I can to her home (we live over 25 miles apart) and we started keeping count, and use a steno pad for keeping record of each game. With UPWORDS, a word is fair game for modifications and higher scoring. A letter atop another letter has greater value. It is very strategic and lot more flexible a game. Why on earth it is called "Scrabble Upwords" is a good question. If you like UPWORDS, you likely don't like Scrabble all that much. And if you are a Scrabble player, likely you are dedicated to the flat construction of words, which I personally find boring. One reviewer complained about the smell of plastic. Hello. It's compact size and good design has made it a constant companion every time we travel. Moreover, its versatility has advantages that facilitate our passion for Scrabble: we can start a game at home, take it to another room or the back yard, finish it later, or complete a game after we return home that we began on an airplane, in a waiting room or airport terminal. Many happy hours!<br /><br />However, we just bought two new sets in July 2009 -- as gifts. We've used one of them several times and, much to our chagrin, find that the engineering of the pieces in the new sets is inferior. Our original set bought 3 years ago has perfect molding of the pieces so they pop in/out of place --no chance of loss or interruption of an on-going game. The new set has a few flaws in at least 8-10 pieces; the 'fit' of these letters isn't snug -- letters can fall out. <br /><br />We just returned from a trip, and intend to register a complaint to Hasbro about the quality glitch. I believe one of the reviews claimed that the letter tiles were plastic - this is not the case, they are wooden tiles painted black with silver writing and ours all look perfect (no scratches and you can see what all of the letters are just fine). My favourite thing about this board is that everything fits inside the little storage slots on the bottom of the board, and then the board folds up to get put away. Also, the board rotates around in a circle which is handy, and although it isn't whisper quiet (as another review complained about) - who cares! <br /><br />I guess the one thing about this board that could be better are the racks that hold your letter tiles. They are cheaper than I expected, even though I knew they were going to be plastic. I know some people also complained that the colors on the board were changed but unless you're a scrabble champion this probably won't make any difference to your gameplay.<br /><br />All in all, if you want a great scrabble board that is a bit fancier than the basic version for a reasonable price, this is a great option. The same was mentioned for the center star square, a DWS, which can be similarly abused by the player going first.<br /><br />This analysis is correct and can make the game one-sided. After purchasing this game, as I have played the original game professionally, it would make sense for players to develop a series of "house rules" to overcome these issues. Here are my own suggestions:<br /><br />1) If a player hits a TWS, they should score the play, then clear the ENTIRE board of dice and have the next player begin again at the center square.<br />2) To make the center square less abusive, it should double the value of the first word played there ONLY ONCE, but be a regular non-bonus square thereafter. This would seem to encourage players to move away from the center and bring the other DWS's and other bonus squares into play. When the dice would be cleared from the board entirely, then it could be a true DWS again.<br />3) Regarding the "Qu" die face, while it kind of sucks that it's not just "Q," it should be left the way it is, but perhaps a bingo involving this face could be considered valid with only 5 other die faces, since "Qu" is still 2 letters, for a total of 7. In other words, one could consider playing a 6-die-face, 7-letter "Qu" word a bingo. (One example could be ESQuIRE.) Perhaps you could also have an additional bonus for the inclusion of a 7th die face to use this way for making an "eight-letter" word.<br /><br />These problems aside, it makes for a fun, short game. What I particularly like is that it forces players to learn the short words (2-4 letters), which make up roughly 70-75% of your score in the original game. Note that the two middle row/middle column DLS are positioned three, rather than four (in the boardgame), squares away from the center. This makes four-letter words very potent to begin the game, especially if you roll letters with face values of at least 3 points. Four-letter J, K, X, and Z words and "five-letter" "Qu" words will be devastating on turn one. Opportunities to score this high in the board game are sometimes hard to come by.<br /><br />The focus for short words is a good one here, because even after doing some personal play-testing of my own, to get a feel for the mechanics, and looking at the letter distribution on the combined 72 die faces, it would appear that getting a bingo roll is very difficult, much more so than drawing a bingo rack from a 100-tile bag at the beginning of the board game. I did once roll AEIMNST to make the word INMATES, but that was the only bingo roll out of about 300-400 rolls of seven dice. It is very easy to roll the letters that are non-conducive to bingos in Scrabble Express, simply because it is easy to draw the dice containing those faces.<br /><br />It's otherwise a very nicely designed and packaged game, and is easily packed in a small bag or backpack for road travel. The cylindrical pod is a nice touch and I think the quartered board is attractive.
